Junior programs: Gr 4 to 6

Energy In Action
(gr: 4 to 6 - Limited to one class and offered only in November and April. )
Students will take part in interactive workstations to learn about solar and wind power, as well as traditional methods of energy use. In the afternoon, students will visit the forest to experience a food chain in action and the overall concept of energy flow through a variety of hands-on activities by becoming a "Munchline Monitor". Students will complete their visit by making one commitment to energy reduction in their lives.

Instincts for Survival
(gr: 4 and up - fall, winter, spring)
This physically active simulation game helps students to understand environmental niches, animal adaptations, energy flow, and predator-prey relationships by role-playing the life of a herbivore, omnivore or carnivore. This game is completed with a discussion of how people and limiting factors, such as disease, impact on natural ecosystems.

Map and Compass
(gr: 4 to 8 - fall, winter, spring)

Junior and Intermediate students learn the basic parts of a compass and how to find north and to orient their map. The students are put to the age-appropriate challenge of using their map and compass to find their way on the trails.

Pioneer Snowshoe Excursion
(gr: 3,5,6 - winter)

Strap on wooden snowshoes and experience travel from long ago. Venture over frozen marshes and take in the history of the area and imagine yourself back in time. Snowshoe rental fee is $2.00 per person in addition to the regular program fee. (Limited to one class per visit due to equipment. A rental fee is charged to teachers and parent volunteers.)

Plants Large and Small
(gr: 3, 4 and 6 - fall, spring)
Students will explore, indentify, classify, and learn the stories of plants in both field and forest habitats in the fall and winter, and the marsh plants will be included in the spring program. Through a game and hands-on activities, students will come to understand the basic requirements of plants, physical characteristics, and special adaptations of different plants. Students will leave with a greater understanding of their interdependence with plants on earth.

Ski Lessons
(gr: 3 to 8 - winter)

Bring your class out for cross-country ski lessons! The ski rental cost is $8.00 per student in addition to the regular program fee. (Limited to one class per visit due to equipment. A rental fee is charged to teachers and parent volunteers.)

Soil Treasures
(gr: 3,4 - fall, spring)

Through role playing, students become Good Soil Pirates in search of soil treasures. The Good Soil Pirates will experience a sensory soil profile, soil organisms, fungi friends, and a soil food chain game. Your students will leave inspired to conserve and protect this overlooked element of nature..

Weather Survival Challenge
(gr: 5 - fall, winter, spring)

Your class will take part in a seasonal weather challenge. Students will learn how weather directly impacts humans, plants and animals. The dramatic outdoor weather scenario take place hiking through fields and forest. Through teamwork and dramatization, your students will be challenged to discover the effects and the interconnection of temperature, cloud formation, wind speed, air pressure, fronts, and precipitation.

Cost:

$6.50 per student attending for all regular half-day programs.

$4.50 per student attending from the Limestone District School Board (the Board pays a $2.00 per student subsidy).

$3.50 per student attending from the Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board (the Board pays a $3.00 per student subsidy).
